In Texas, the ability to drive is a privilege. However, if you live in Texas, you understand that the privilege to drive is an absolute necessity. Texas is big! Correction, Texas is HUGE!!! An ODL is a restricted license which allows the driver to operate a motor vehicle on public roads in the performance of the driver’s occupation, to attend school, to make medical appointments, and to perform essential household duties. The ODL is valid for non-commercial vehicle purposes only and is limited to a four-hour daily restriction on use unless waived by a judge for good cause.

To obtain an ODL you must file a verified (sworn) petition with the proper court along with the applicable filing fees. Included in with the petition must be a valid SR-22 insurance form and proposed court order. Once granted by the judge, a certified copy of the Petition and Order acts as a temporary ODL until the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) issues the appropriate occupational license.
